Read "for real" which made it even funnierThe reader tells Lorelei's diary-story with an openness, a directness that charms the listener. This is a real Lorelei, not a cartoon, and therefore even funnier.

Grandmother's Bell and the Wagon Train 1849
Published in Hardcover by Barsotti Books (October, 1996)
Average review score:

A beautiful story for my children's bed time.At first notice Mathis' illustrations drew me to "Grandmother's Bell and The Wagon Train 1849". The innocent expressions and gay emotions the illustrator conveyed on paper inhanced this quasi-historical children's story about a 19th century American pioneering family. I expected an excellent story and was mildly surprised as the illustrator is obivously an expert in story telling, as is, Joan Barsotti, the author of this grand adventure.
Barsotti's story is as poetic as it is page turning and together the authur & illustrator tell a beautiful tale worthy of promting love and courage in my children's dream adventures.
This book has become a favorite of my children and I look forward to Barsotti's next masterpiece.

The Happy Hedgehog Band
Published in Hardcover by Pearson Learning (May, 1992)
Average review score:

Hedgehogs Inspire Daily DrummingInspired by Harry's enthusiastic drumming and his band's musical merryment, my seventeen-month-old son and I now daily pound out joyous tunes on a collection of old coffee cans and wooden spoons. The repetitive tum-tum-te-tum and diddle-diddle-dum of the hedgehogs' drums moves us to dance, hum, and drum in different ways at every reading. My son loves to match the soothingly rendered animals to their contributed sounds as I ask "Who says 'Pweee', 'chkka chkka', or 'pop pop'?" And what toddler can resist accompanying the resounding BOOM! that ends this tale with his own whack on the can!

Harry Stack Sullivan: Interpersonal Theory and Psychotherapy (Makers of Modern Psychotherapy)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (March, 1997)
Average review score:

Best book written on the founder of the interpersonal schoolI've read all the major books written on Harry Stack Sullivan and this one is by far the clearest, most comprehensive, and easy to understand. I can think of no better introduction to the interpersonal school of psychiatry. Sullivan is one of those seminal thinkers who was ignored for years because he was so critical of psychoanalysis and because his ideas were so radical. Only now, fifty years after his death are the implications of his work beginning to be grappled with by the field of psychiatry. If you want to understand Sullivan, before you read Sullivan, read this book. This is the book to start with.

Health Care Divided: Race and Healing a Nation
Published in Hardcover by University of Michigan Press (February, 1999)
Average review score:

The devil is in the details of how health care is dividedDavid B.Smith provides the detailed history of how the goal of equity in health care provision remains unfulfilled to this day. He analyzes the historic crucial time periods when decisions were made and practices established. He describes the mechanisms leading to different health care for white and black and for rich and poor. He documents the economic and the ethnic prejudicial bases for this abridgement of civil rights. This book is a must for all concerned about American justice.

Heaven, hell, and hades : a historical and theological survey of personal eschatology
Published in Unknown Binding by Henceforth Publications ()
Average review score:

Barton's "Heaven, Hell and Hades"Freeman Barton is a well-trained biblical and historical scholar who nevertheless can write clearly and simply for non-scholars. This book is one of the best introductions available to the subject known as "conditional immortality." From the Middle Ages onward, the doctrine of the unconditional immortality of the human spirit developed and became the prominent view in most Christian denominations. By this doctrine, everybody has eternal life -- most people have an agonizing one in hell forever, while some have a blissful one in heaven forever. However, many scholars have shown that the evidence from the Bible favors the view that the human spirit is not automatically eternal, but has to be granted eternal life by God. Barton examines in rather ample detail (for so compact a book) the evidence for both automatic immortality and conditional immortality, and in the process teaches the reader a great deal about the whole afterlife perspective of the Bible. I think he succeeds admirably in his task, and this book is timely and interesting reading.

great drawings and a fun "scary" story for little onesBarton has great colorful drawings in his childrens books and this one was my daughter's favorites. A little girl alligator goes trick or treating and meets some very strange neighbors. She has a great adventure with her new friends, many of whom look familiar to us grownups.
